Philanthropy and the Coronavirus crisis : Making the shift towards a preventive model

Faced with the scale of needs to be met, PhiLab researchers present four strategies philanthropy could resort to in the face of the current Coronavirus crisis

By: Diane Alalouf-Hall, Jean-Marc Fontan and David Grant-Poitras

1. Adapt activities to face the crisis

  • Expand the notion of 'donation'

  • Broaden the scope of solidarity to include the many manifestations of grassroots initiatives

3. Post-crisis recovery: A question of social justice

  • Be efficient by making resources available quickly for first-responders.

  • Philanthropy has the financial capacity to support the work of organizations both locally and internationally

2. Join the global effort to fight the pandemic

4. Shift to a preventive model

  • Adapt to this century’s challenges and go beyond the narrow definition of reactive charity

  • Shift to preventive philanthropy to bring the necessary transformation of our current economic paradigm

  • The crisis is highlighting social inequalities, with some groups being more affected than offers

  • Philanthropy can act now to address the social injustices revealed by the COVID-19 crisis
