Biography
Dr. Charles Sellen has conducted research on philanthropy since 2004, when he was studying at Georgetown University and writing a report on the international activities of american foundations at the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C. Charles earned a PhD in economics of philanthropy (SciencesPo Paris, 2012). He first worked for a Paris-based consultancy in stakeholder engagement and collective intelligence (2008-2011), then for France’s firstborne research center on philanthropy (CerPhi, 2013-2014). He subsequently joined the French government’s bilateral development aid agency as the editorial coordinator for scientific publishing (2014-2019). Charles served as a French laureate in the Fulbright “NGO Leaders” program as well as the inaugural Global Philanthropy Fellow at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (2019-2021).
His research on philanthropy intersects with international relations, global cooperation towards development, and science of happiness. Among several volunteering commitments, he served as board member and chairman (2011-2018) of La Fabrique Spinoza, the leading Francophone nonprofit think tank on happiness and well-being.
